I now see from the internet there is 'Alibaba Group Holdings' code 9988. I assume that's the stock Alex is referring to. But curiously it isn't listed in Saturday's SCMP "Markets: Hong Kong Stocks" !
Doug, 9988 is the Hong listed shares of Alibaba in Hong Kong dollars while BABA is the New York listed company traded in US dollars.
While traded on different stock exchanges, BABA and 9988.HK are in essence the same asset, as they both are ownership certificates to the Cayman Islands based Alibaba Group Holding Ltd provided via the Variable Interest Entity (VIE) structure.
BABA trades in USD on NYSE, with each ADR representing eight shares in the Cayman Islands holding. 9988.HK trades in HKD on HKEX, with each share equalling one share in the Cayman Islands holding.
Peter. Sorry I'm interested in following Alex Wong's six stock picks, one of which is Alibaba. But when I look in the SCMP "Markets: Hong Kong Stocks" there are two Alibaba companies. Is he referring to 'Alibaba Pictures' code 1060 or 'Alibaba Health' code 241 ? Also is another of his stock pick 'Meitu' code 1357 ? Doug
